    The 2018 Canada Cup had everything a wheelchair rugby fan could want!

  • Six of the world’s best teams battled it out with everyone getting the chance to play each other in the round-robin phase to set up three exciting final match-ups. Despite a valiant effort from Japan in both the round-robin and championship matches, the Americans went undefeated once again to claim their sixth title.

USA’s Key Defence Locks Down The Opposition

Team USA continued their dominant ways at the Canada Cup in 2018! While they continued to live up their reputation by balancing their attack, it was on the defensive end where they were most impressive.

 

Their full-court press was dangerous as always, but it was their key defence that powered them to a sixth title, creating turnovers and frustrating even the fastest of opponents.

 

Japan Makes A Statement

Japan was the surprise team of the 2018 Canada Cup pushing to a best-ever 2nd place finish and riding that momentum all the way to their first World Wheelchair Rugby Championship!

 

Led by tournament All-Stars Daisuke Ikezaki (3.0) and Seiya Norimatsu (1.5), Japan outclassed Canada and the European sides, pushed past Australia in overtime and put up a valiant fight against the Americans in two close losses. Losses that they would avenge two months later in Sydney to become World Champions!

Canada Cup Debuts for 5 Canadians

Team Canada went through a number of changes between the 2016 and 2018 Canada Cups. This meant that 5 new athletes got to represent their country at home for the first time in 2018. New head coach Patrick Cote handed Canada Cup debuts to emerging talents Branden Troutman, Matt Debly, Shayne Smith, Anthony Letourneau and Eric Rodrigues!
